With the use of Yupo paper, a 100% synthetic paper that does not absorb ink, pigments, watercolors or oil paints, Lane is able to create a three-dimensional effect similar to that created by sculptors using the bas-relief technique. Pigments that are printed on Yupo paper can take up to three months to dry, so Lane has the opportunity to manipulate those pigments and then supplement them with oil paints blended with impasto and/or oleopasto. With the application of multiple layers of this mixture, Lane can transform a two-dimensional photograph into a multi-dimensional tactile event – with the observer inclined to reach out and touch the painted surface; or seek a different perspective because the photograph demands to be viewed from multiple angles.
